Jones Joinery among first to use good wood

July 2008
As more people think about the environmental aspects of their new building or extension, the origin of wood used is an important factor.

At Jones Joinery, we’re one of the few manufacturers using wood from Papua New Guinea managed forests. The rosewood we use is Greenpeace approved ‘good wood’.

Greenpeace classifies good wood as timber and wood products that come from ethical and ecologically sustainable sources, produced with minimal harm to forests while protecting the local community’s livelihood. Good wood is also certified by a credible third party system such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or is verified as coming from well-managed forests and plantations.

Ecotimber is one type of good wood that is currently in transition towards certification. It is produced by communities in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea with assistance from Greenpeace.

Ecotimber is milled from hardwood trees, including Pacific rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus), dillenia (Dillenia spp.), vitex (Vitex cofassus) and and tuan (Pometia pinnata). It is mainly used for joinery, floorboards, benchtops, decking, panelling and furniture.

Knowing which species to choose can reduce sales of illegally harvested timber and stop the destruction of the world’s forests. Greenpeace aims to educate consumers and promote demand with its good wood campaign, which lists ‘good’ and ‘bad’ wood according to its source, and where to buy it in Australia.

Take a look at one of our projects where we used Papua New Guinea rosewood to create an impressive wall of curved bi-fold doors. [link to Case Study 1 – Brighton house/Classic Projects].
